-
- Corporate Backgrounder
-
-
- I. Introduction
-
- Working from a foundation of experience and understanding in the creation and
- marketing of local area network (LAN) software, ELAN Software Corp. has evolved
- into a software development force at the forefront of the industry. ELAN Software
- was recently named a "Company to Watch" in Software MagazineÆs July 1995 "
- Top 100" issue. ELAN SoftwareÆs commitment to customer service is reflected in
- its CompuServe forum (GO:GOLDMINE). Behind ELAN Software lies a belief in the
- incredible potential inherent in contact for workgroups. This belief has fostered a
- desire to develop effective, high performance software programs for the growing
- workgroup software market. Equipped with the foresight of the technologist and
- the single mindedness of the entrepreneur, ELAN has combined the two to produce
- an exceptional program.
-
- Selling to a variety of markets, ELAN is developing a unique niche through its ability
- to design workgroup contact management for the enterprise. While most of the
- available programs focus solely on the individualÆs needs, GoldMine addresses
- both the single-user and network user environments. Conceived and designed for
- networks and distributed remote PCs and notebooks, the program facilitates office
- communication and empowers individuals to work as members of a team.
-
- From a simple idea, ELAN has created a sophisticated application that transcends
- the present capabilities of groupware. Whether implemented for a small business or
- large corporation, GoldMineÆs innovative features and practical applications are
- invaluable assets.
-
- II. The Product
-
- Survival in todayÆs business world requires access to information. Success in
- todayÆs business world requires the ability to effectively share and communicate
- this information. GoldMine was created to address the existing deficiencies and
- limitations in conventional, office workgroup environments. GoldMine 2.5a for
- Windows maintenance upgrade, which shipped October 1994, features
- Automated Processes. GoldMine 2.5a for Windows is the first Windows contact
- management-based groupware program with Automated Processes software agent
- technology specifically designed for the enterprise.
-
- ELAN Software continues to lead the marketplace with the introduction of
- GoldSync, awarded BYTE magazineÆs "Best of COMDEX/Spring Æ95 - Finalist"
- (Best Connectivity Software) and Call Center MagazineÆs "EditorsÆ Choice" (May
- 1995). GoldSync, GoldMineÆs new add-on remote synchronization gateway,
- automates and enhances GoldMineÆs current, manual point-to-point remote
- synchronization, providing data replication between multiple sites, hosts and
- users across the enterprise at designated periods.
-
- GoldMine is a general purpose, PC-based business tool for any professional --
- not just for salespeople or telemarketers. It is a powerful groupware program
- designed to bring "islands of information" together in a PC-networked office
- environment. GoldMine allows for the accurate tracking of a large number of
- business contact transactions -- follow-ups, phone calls, letter generation,
- scheduling, marketing strategies and more. GoldMine automates a myriad of
- day-to-day business activities.
-
- The most comprehensive contact software available for networks and remote
- notebooks today, GoldMine runs on any IBM-compatible portable, desktop or
- networked PC. GoldMine has received many kudos, such as PC MagazineÆs "
- EditorsÆ Choice" (August 1995), Home Office ComputingÆs "Best Buy" (July 1995),
- InfoWorldÆs "Top Score" (Dec. 26, 1994), PC/ComputingÆs 1994 MVP Award for
- business applications (December 1994) and Windows MagazineÆs annual "Win 100"
- award (February 1995). Windows Magazine also awarded GoldMine its highest
- rating, "Recommended" in its September 1994 contact management comparison
- review.
-
- Other awards include Computer Reseller News Test CenterÆs highest rating,
- "Recommended" (Dec. 5, 1994), CPA Technology ReportÆs Annual "All Star"
- award (July 1994), PC MagazineÆs "EditorsÆ Choice" (DOS version - August 1993)
- and Mobile OfficeÆs highest rating, "High Honors" (July 1993).
-
- III. The Industry
-
- Characterized by intense competition, the contact management software industry
- has developed rapidly in recent years. Unlike other PIMs and contact managers,
- GoldMine was conceived and designed as a workgroup solution for business.
- GoldMine competitively edges out existing high-end sales automation applications
- by providing a more intuitive interface and expanded feature set. As PIMs extend
- their feature set, they will eventually merge with contact managers to create a new
- category -- "Information Managers." GoldMineÆs unique core of workgroup tools and
- sophisticated communications features will define its position within the next
- generation of office automation applications -- "Workgroup Information Managers."
-
- Instead of mini and mainframe computers being controlled by systems engineers
- and MIS groups, end users are now able to buy off-the-shelf software packages for
- a variety of business applications. Although network administrators still manage the
- work of connecting individuals to share peripherals and back-up data, todayÆs LAN
- is rapidly becoming the platform of choice for departmental applications.
-
- This change in computing affects the manager of the end users as well.
- Computer-savvy managers still have ultimate control over the data being dispersed,
- but only if it is understood that the information can be merged into a central
- application. GoldMine was designed to meet the needs of both managers and end
- users by automating and centralizing all of a businessÆ communication -- both internal
- and otherwise.
-
- IV. Distribution/Dealer Channels
-
- GoldMine is sold directly through a network of preferred dealers, resellers and
- distributors. These resellers are focused on automating the sales force and other
- individuals who interact with people on a daily basis. ELAN has gone to great
- lengths to ensure exclusive representation of its product line by a variety of VARs.
-
- Worldwide in scope, ELANÆs distribution has been centered on the booming
- U.S., European and Pacific Rim software markets. As part of the relationship
- between ELAN and its solutions partners -- including Merisel, Ingram Micro,
- CompuUSA, Egghead, Tech Data and Wireless Telecom -- a comprehensive
- program of cooperative marketing is available. It includes lead generation and
- distribution to VARs, trade show participation, national advertising, international
- public relations and seminars. To maintain its technological edge, ELAN continues
- to work closely with other industry innovators.
-
- V. User Profile
-
- ELAN software is used by a variety of professionals. An ideal package for any
- sales force, GoldMine is also a powerful application for real estate agents,
- stockbrokers, insurance agencies, technical support staff and more. Due to
- GoldMineÆs great versatility, potential applications and users are almost limitless.
-
- Typical business applications include the creation of detailed databases for
- everything from sales leads to vendor contacts. Sales forces, large or small, can
- benefit from GoldMineÆs ability to automate even the most complex business issues.
-
- VI. The Principal Players
-
- Elan Susser, President
- Combining a strong technical background with the desire to create an
- exceptional line of software, Susser brings a wealth of experience to ELAN. An
- accomplished systems integrator, he was introduced to computing in 1980.
- Mr. Susser graduated magna cum laude from California State University, Northridge

- both a systems engineer and sales representative at Banyan. It was at Banyan
- that Ferrara saw the immense potential for LANs and came to understand
- networkingÆs complex issues. Mr. Ferrara is a graduate of California State University,
- Northridge where he received his bachelorÆs degree in computer science.
